Argo Profile

We had always liked travelling, thought we really started collecting WHS in 2006. Then came the children, making the collection more challenging, as our goal is to visit these sites together as a family. Fortunately, living in Europe gives many opportunities of reasonable trips with two young children: we try to cover Europe in the most complete way, leaving long haul trips for later.

Our alias “Argo” relates to the name of the mythological ship which was used by Jason and companions for their trips, including the famous Golden Fleece quest – thus a good name for our own quest of WHS!

Le Charolais-Brionnais (T)

Argo France - 18-May-24

Le Charolais-Brionnais (T)

We explored the Charolais-Brionnais area (a “pays”, in French) during a sunny week-end in May 2024. Charolaises cows (together with Bazadaises, from the South-West of France) are very well known in France for being the paramount of beef meat. What makes the proposed area for WHS special is that is it totally dedicated to the breeding of these cows, and the landscape was completely transformed and adapted to that activity some 250 years ago : fields were replaced by meadows, bordered by hedges or lines of trees. The result is a green, hilly “bocage” landscape, dotted with white cows here and there.

Hangar Y (T)

Argo France - 06-Apr-24

Hangar Y (T)

Things have changed a lot at Hangar Y since our visit in September 2014, so it was time for a new visit and review. The Hangar has been fully refurbished and repaired, it now (since March 2023) operates as a museum focussing mainly and obviously on the history of balloons and dirigibles airships, plus some side galleries hosting temporary exhibitions (modern art more (or less) related to air and space). The parc around is accessible as well, with a restaurant at the side of the basin, and a “guinguette” (open in summer only).

Ville de Lixus (T)

Argo France - 02-Mar-24

Ville de Lixus (T)

Lixus is claimed one of the oldest settlements of the western Mediterranean antique world – although just “off” the Gibraltar straight, facing the Atlantic Ocean. It was first a Phoenician trade city and was later occupied by Romans and then successive civilisations until Middle-Age. Though as often with this kind of sites, the remains you get to see are mainly from the Roman period. The archaeological site lays on a hillside and top above one of the last meanders of the Loukkos river, overlooking both the plain and the Atlantic Ocean, which makes an enjoyable and strategic location

East Atlantic Flyway (T)

East Atlantic Flyway (T)

Large areas of England East Coast have recently been chosen to make up a new TWHS focusing on migratory birds, as part of the East Atlantic Flyway. Although there is no precise map yet of the proposed site, and boundaries could change of course in the future, I had a closer look at maps that were published in different news websites, and believe we visited at least three areas to be considered under this proposal. The purpose of our visits was each time on another aspect of the place (we are more “history” than “birds” fans), which may be of interest for some other visitors as well, as travelling to the UK to see merely the same as Wadden Sea in mainland Europe may not be so appealing.

Birkenhead Park (T)

Argo France - 17-Oct-23

Birkenhead Park (T)

We visited Birkenhead Park in June 2022. The park is open 24h a day, 7 days a week, free of charge. You can easily park your car (for free as well) along the streets around it, or access it by public transport (by train from Liverpool, which is just on the opposite bank of the Mersey).

Birkenhead Park offers everything you can expect from a typical English city park : wide open greens and wooded areas ; an artificial lake (with ducks and swans) and meandering paths around it, bridges, a bandstand, a boathouse on its shore ; all sport facilities : tennis courts, bowling greens, and of course a cricket ground where the local junior team was practicing on that day. This makes it a very nice place to spend a leisure afternoon. It advertises itself as “the People’s park”, having been thought and created from its very origin as a public park and opened as early as 1846. Open to everyone, all the time. It would even have inspired the creator of Central Park in New York city during a trip he made to Liverpool soon after Birkenhead park had opened
